Points on your License

When a driver is convicted of a traffic offense the resulting points are automatically added to their driving record and can remain there for years. Depending on how many points you accrue over a certain length of time, your license can be suspended or even revoked.

In most states, every traffic violation from improper lane changes to speeding results in the accumulation of driver’s license points.  In states like Florida and South Carolina, it only takes as little as 12 points a year to get a suspended license.

Insurance agencies also monitor the amount of points on your driving record and adjust their rates accordingly, which can add hundreds of dollars to your premiums.

So how can you avoid getting points or get rid of the points you have?
 There are some options if you already have points on your driver’s license. The best option is to try to become a safer driver. Up to 3 points are deducted from your record each year as long as you refrain from incurring more traffic violations.

Some states, including Florida, also offer other options to remove at least a few points from your record such as;
  • Enrolling in driver improvement programs
  • Defensive driving courses
  • Online driving schools
If you have been issued a ticket for a traffic violation and are in danger of receiving points on your license as a result of a conviction, even if the infraction is a small speeding ticket, the best course of action is to contest the ticket in court.

Contesting your traffic violation in court could possibly get both the charge and the resulting points dismissed from your record, or could result in the judge agreeing to a lesser charge, and ultimately lesser points.
