Why should I fight the traffic ticket if I am guilty?
Whether or not you are guilty of the offense, it is always better to fight the ticket. Traffic tickets cause points on one’s license, fines, and an increase of insurance premiums.
 
By fighting the ticket it is possible to reduce fines, eliminate points, or have the case dismissed.
 
Do I need a lawyer for my traffic ticket?
The simple answer to this is no. A defendant can represent themselves in court but it is important to note that a lawyer may be able to get a better deal. Depending on how serious the charges are, such as reckless driving, the defendant may want to seek legal counsel.
 
Is there a statute of limitations on a traffic ticket?
No. The court enters in a guilty plea when the driver does not pay the fine or fails to appear court. The fine that was unpaid can be collected anytime, even many years later.
 
What will happen if I just ignore my traffic ticket?
If the traffic ticket is for a moving violation, ignoring it can result in a suspended license and/or a bench warrant. If caught driving with a suspended license or a warrant you will be arrested.
 
Can I refuse to sign my traffic ticket?
No. Refusing to sign to a traffic ticket can result in arrest in some states. Signing the ticket is not an admission of guilt, it is only a promise that you will show up in court or pay the fine.
 
Can a police officer issue me a traffic ticket if they are out of their jurisdiction? 
If a police officer is in their jurisdiction they can issue a traffic ticket. If the officer is out of their jurisdiction the laws can vary. Some counties and states have inter-agency or inter-jurisdictional agreements that allow them to exercise their authority outside of their jurisdictions.
 
If I lose my traffic ticket where can I locate information on it?
Most counties now have websites for their clerk of courts where information on traffic tickets can be accessed. If there is no website for the issuing county then calling the court in the county or city will be the best option. A timely response to the court is imperative, failure to pay the fine or request a court date may result in a suspension of driving privileges and/or a bench warrant.
